Geo-technical Investigation
Geo-technical investigation is a systematic process of studying, examining, and analysing the physical and engineering properties of soil, rock, and groundwater at a proposed construction site. This comprehensive assessment helps determine the strength, composition, stability, and load-bearing capacity of the ground, which are critical factors in ensuring the safety and durability of any structure. By providing accurate and detailed information about subsurface conditions, geo-technical investigations enable engineers and designers to select the most suitable type of foundation, anticipate and mitigate potential ground-related risks, and optimize construction techniques.
What is its working procedure:
Planning the Investigation
Defining the scope of work and determining the required boreholes, pits, in-situ tests, along with the suitable methods and equipment to be employed.
Field Exploration & Sampling
Drilling boreholes and digging test pits to study soil and rock layers, and collecting disturbed and undisturbed soil or rock samples for laboratory testing.
Laboratory Testing
Conducting detailed soil and rock tests, including grain size analysis, shear strength, compaction, consolidation, and chemical analysis.
Analysis & Interpretation
Evaluating field and laboratory results to determine soil classification, strength, stability, settlement characteristics, and bearing capacity.
